Dr. Abdulmalek Al Alsheikh receives awardThe 2009 Geo-Tunis Scientific Award was conferred upon the Prince Sultan Research Center for Environment Water and Desert (PSRCEWD) on the occasion of the 4th Annual International Congress of Geo-Tunis which was held in Tunisia's capital city from 16-20 December 2009.

The award was given to the Center "for its leadership in combating water scarcity, most significantly through its support of the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for  Water". The Center is the headquarters for the Prize's General Secretariat and provides the logistics and facilities for all of the Prize's daily operations.

Geo-Tunis chose the Center from "over 20 research centers condcuting scientific research in water reseources, the environment, and desertification." The Center was  chosen not only for its research activities, but the decisive factor was its "support for the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water which in  itself conducts research and carries out scientific studies aimed at combatting desertification, protecting natural resources, and optimising their use."

Dr. Abdulmalek A. Al Alsheikh - who is the Prize's General Secretary as well as the director of the Center - received the award on the Center's behalf.

The Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water recognizes the importance that GIS and remote sensing has for the effective management and protection  of the world’s water resources. For this reason, the Water Resources Management & Protection Prize for the current (4th) Award has as its topic "Remote Sensing and GIS Applications for Water  Resources Management".

The Prize's participated in the 2009 Geo-Tunis Congress in order to draw the attention of the Remote Sensing and GIS community to the Prize and to invite them to nominate their best works involving water-related applications.
