The Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water was the Platinum Sponsor for the 24rd European Meeting on Environmental Chemistry (EMEC24), an annual interdisciplinary conference that covers the latest research for a broad range of topics within the field of environmental chemistry.
PSIPW has partnered with EMEC since 2017 by providing grants to plenary speakers and awards to young researchers.
EMEC24 was held in Alicante, Spain, from 26 to 29 November 2024. It brought together environmental chemists at all career levels, from world-leading senior scientists to as early-stage researchers, committed to protecting the environment and ensuring the sustainability of our natural environment.
EMEC is organised annually on behalf of the Association for Chemistry and the Environment (ACE). It is held in early December and always attracts highly relevant high-quality scientific presentations in environmental chemistry and related areas.
PSIPW supported three keynote speakers at the conference:
Ana Rita Lado Ribeiro is principal researcher at LSRE-LCM (Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, FEUP).
Her presentation was entitled: "Are we aware of the role of enantioselectivity in the environment?"
Lourdes Ramos Rivera is a Senior Scientific Researcher of the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC, IQOG, Madrid, Spain).
Her presentation was entitled: "Suspect and non-target screening of persistent organic pollutants in environmental samples by two-dimensional gas chromatography−time-of-flight mass spectrometry." José Juan Santana Rodríguez is Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry and Director of Research Institute for Environmental Studies and Natural Resources (i-UNAT) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).
His presentation was entitled: "Organic UV filters as indicators of anthropogenic micropollution in insular ecosystems."
A crucial aspect of EMEC is the support it gives to young researchers. There are always a large number of young participants at EMEC, and their presentations at the conference are judged by a jury who nominate the best papers and posters.
Eight of these young researchers were honoured at the EMEC Awards Ceremony on the conference’s final day with awards provided through PSIPW’s Prince Sultan Grant Programme.
